What is addiction?

It is a chronic illness in which a person loses control over using a substance or engaging in a behavior despite the harm it causes. There is intense craving, a need for increasing amounts and distress when stopping. It is not a lack of willpower: the brain changes how it works.

What types of addiction are there?

To substances such as alcohol, nicotine, cannabis, cocaine, opioids or tranquilizers, and also behavioral addictions such as gambling, video games or problematic internet and social media use.

What does treatment involve?

It usually has several stages: supervised detox when withdrawal is risky, as with alcohol or tranquilizers; medications that reduce craving or prevent relapse for some substances; psychotherapy such as motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioral therapy; treatment of associated anxiety or depression; and support groups. It can be outpatient or residential.

What if relapse happens?

Relapses are common and part of recovery, not a failure. What matters is returning to treatment quickly and adjusting the plan. Families also need guidance to support without covering up or punishing.
