What is carpal tunnel syndrome?

It is compression of the median nerve as it passes through the wrist. It is common in people who make repetitive hand movements, during pregnancy, and with diabetes, hypothyroidism and arthritis.

How do you recognize it?

Tingling and numbness in the thumb, index and middle fingers, often worse at night and waking the person up, eased by shaking the hand. Over time there may be clumsiness, dropping objects and weakness in the muscles at the base of the thumb.

How is it diagnosed?

With a physical exam and an electromyography with nerve conduction study, which confirms compression and measures its severity. Ultrasound is sometimes used.

How is it treated?

Mild cases use a wrist splint at night, activity adjustments and physical therapy. An injection can provide temporary relief. If symptoms persist or strength is lost, carpal tunnel release surgery is a short procedure with very good results.
