Why is back pain so common?

Almost everyone will have it at some point. Most cases are mechanical: the pain comes from muscles, ligaments or joints overloaded by posture, strain, inactivity or excess weight, and does not indicate a serious disease.

What should you do when it starts?

Staying as active as the pain allows is better than bed rest, which slows recovery. Local heat, a pain reliever for a few days and walking usually help. Most episodes improve within a few weeks.

When should you see a doctor?

If pain lasts more than 4 to 6 weeks, keeps coming back, travels down the leg, or comes with fever, weight loss, a history of cancer or osteoporosis. With leg weakness or loss of bladder control, go to the emergency room.

How can you prevent it?

Strengthen your core and back, exercise regularly, maintain good posture when sitting at work, lift with your knees bent and keep a healthy weight.
