What is ectropion?

Ectropion is a condition in which the edge of the eyelid, usually the lower eyelid, turns outward and leaves part of the eye's surface exposed. It may develop with aging, after trauma or surgery, or due to changes in the tissues supporting the eyelid.

What are the symptoms of ectropion?

It may cause excessive tearing, irritation, a foreign body sensation, dryness, and redness. Because the surface of the eye is more exposed, ectropion can also increase the risk of corneal and conjunctival irritation or inflammation.

How is ectropion treated?

Mild cases may be managed with artificial tears and other measures to protect the ocular surface. When the condition is significant or causes complications, eyelid repair surgery may be necessary to improve eyelid position and protect the eye.
