What does a dermatologist do?
A dermatologist is a medical doctor specialized in diagnosing, treating, and preventing conditions related to the skin, hair, and nails. Dermatologists are trained to treat common problems such as acne, skin spots, allergies, and rashes, as well as more complex conditions like dermatitis, psoriasis, skin infections, and skin cancer. In addition, many dermatologists also provide treatments to improve the health and appearance of the skin through clinical and cosmetic dermatology procedures.

When should I see a dermatologist?
You should consider seeing a dermatologist if you notice skin problems such as persistent acne, unusual spots, itching, redness, excessive hair loss, changes in moles, or skin lesions that do not heal. It is also recommended to visit a dermatologist if you want to evaluate your skin health, prevent skin diseases, or receive professional advice about treatments to improve the appearance and care of your skin.

What conditions do dermatologists treat?
Dermatologists treat a wide range of conditions affecting the skin, hair, and nails. Some of the most common include:

- Acne
- Dermatitis and skin allergies
- Psoriasis
- Skin infections
- Hair loss (alopecia)
- Fungal infections of the skin or nails
- Rosacea
- Skin cancer and suspicious skin lesions
- Skin pigmentation and dark spots

Types of dermatology
Dermatology includes different areas of specialization depending on the type of treatment needed:

- Clinical dermatology: focused on diagnosing and treating diseases of the skin, hair, and nails.
- Cosmetic dermatology: focused on improving skin appearance through treatments such as laser procedures, chemical peels, dermal fillers, botulinum toxin, and skin rejuvenation treatments.
- Surgical dermatology: includes procedures to remove skin lesions, moles, or skin tumors.

How much does a dermatology consultation cost?
The cost of a dermatology consultation in Colombia may vary depending on the city, the specialist’s experience, and the clinic where the consultation takes place. In general, a dermatology consultation can range from approximately $120,000 to $250,000 Colombian pesos. In some cases, the dermatologist may recommend additional tests or treatments depending on the diagnosis.

What is usually included in a dermatology appointment?
During a dermatology consultation, the specialist performs a detailed evaluation of the skin, hair, or nails depending on the reason for the visit. This usually includes a clinical examination, diagnosis of the condition, treatment recommendations, and guidance on proper skin care. In some cases, minor procedures, mole evaluations using dermoscopy, or personalized dermatological treatment plans may also be recommended.

How to choose a dermatologist?
When choosing a dermatologist, it is important to consider the type of treatment or specialty you need. Some dermatologists focus mainly on clinical dermatology to treat skin conditions, while others specialize in cosmetic dermatology or laser procedures. It is also helpful to review the doctor’s experience, training, the technology used in the clinic, and patient reviews.
