Ocular ultrasound is an imaging test that uses sound waves to examine the internal structures of the eye and orbit. It is particularly useful when the inside of the eye cannot be adequately visualized because of advanced cataracts, bleeding, or other conditions that make examination difficult.

It can be used to evaluate the retina, vitreous, optic nerve, eye wall, and orbit. It can also help assess retinal detachment, vitreous hemorrhage, intraocular lesions or masses, and other conditions that require further evaluation.

How is an ocular ultrasound performed?

The examination is generally performed by placing a transducer over the closed eyelid with gel to facilitate transmission of the ultrasound waves. It is a non-invasive procedure and usually requires no special preparation. The ophthalmologist interprets the images together with the clinical examination and other tests when necessary.
