What is osteoporosis?

It is loss of bone density and quality that makes bones fragile and prone to breaking from minor falls. It has no symptoms until a fracture occurs, which is why it is called a silent disease. The most typical fractures are in the wrist, hip and vertebrae.

Women from age 65 and men from 70, or earlier with risk factors: early menopause, previous fractures from minor falls, long-term corticosteroid use, low body weight, smoking, heavy alcohol use or a family history of hip fracture.

How is it prevented and treated?

With enough calcium and vitamin D, weight-bearing and strengthening exercise, not smoking, moderating alcohol and preventing falls at home. When fracture risk is high, medications can slow bone loss or help build bone.
