What is phimosis?

Phimosis is a condition in which the foreskin cannot be easily or fully retracted to expose the head of the penis, known as the glans. In young children, a foreskin that does not fully retract can be a normal part of development during the first years of life. However, in older children, adolescents, and adults, phimosis may be associated with scarring, inflammation, recurrent infections, or other conditions that make foreskin retraction difficult.

What are the symptoms of phimosis?

Symptoms may include difficulty or pain when retracting the foreskin, pain during erections or sexual intercourse, inflammation, recurrent infections, difficulty maintaining proper hygiene, and, in some cases, changes in urinary flow. If the foreskin becomes retracted behind the glans and cannot be returned to its normal position, a medical emergency called paraphimosis can occur.
