What is a pinguecula?

A pinguecula is a small yellowish or whitish growth that develops on the conjunctiva, usually near the cornea. It is associated with prolonged exposure to factors such as ultraviolet radiation, wind, dust, and dry conditions.

What are the symptoms of a pinguecula?

In many cases, a pinguecula does not cause symptoms. When it becomes inflamed, it may cause redness, irritation, a foreign body sensation, burning, or dry eye. Unlike a pterygium, a pinguecula generally does not grow onto the cornea.

How is a pinguecula treated?

Treatment depends on the symptoms. Artificial tears may help relieve irritation, along with protective measures such as sunglasses with ultraviolet protection. In uncommon cases, when the lesion causes significant discomfort or cosmetic concerns, an ophthalmologist may consider removal.
