What is pterygium?

Pterygium is a growth of conjunctival tissue that can extend onto the cornea. It is commonly associated with prolonged exposure to ultraviolet radiation, wind, dust, and other environmental factors. It may affect one or both eyes.

What are the symptoms of pterygium?

In addition to a visible growth on the white part of the eye, it may cause redness, irritation, a foreign body sensation, burning, and tearing. When it grows onto the cornea, it may affect vision or change the shape of the cornea.

How is pterygium treated?

When symptoms occur, an ophthalmologist may recommend artificial tears and protection from sunlight. If the pterygium grows, affects vision, causes persistent discomfort, or has features that require further evaluation, pterygium surgery may be recommended to remove it.
