Neural Therapy

Postherpetic neuralgia is one of the most painful complications that can occur after shingles (herpes zoster). Although the skin lesions heal, in some patients the pain persists for months or even years.

This neuropathic pain is often described as intense burning, electric shock-like sensations, or extreme sensitivity to touch. In many cases, medications do not fully control the pain or cause side effects that are difficult to tolerate.

In my clinical experience in Bucaramanga, neural therapy for postherpetic neuralgia has become an effective therapeutic alternative for patients seeking relief when other options have not worked.

In Which Patients Do I Recommend Neural Therapy?

I recommend neural therapy for postherpetic neuralgia especially when:

  • The patient has tried multiple medications for neuropathic pain without significant improvement.
  • The pain is so intense that it affects sleep, work performance, or social life.
  • The patient cannot tolerate medication side effects or does not wish to continue long-term drug treatments.
  • Due to advanced age or medical conditions, it is preferable to avoid strong medications because of contraindications and side effects..

In these cases, neural therapy may offer a safe and localized alternative for managing pain after shingles.

When Do I Not Recommend It?

I do not recommend neural therapy in:

  • Patients with specific medical contraindications to the procedure.
  • Individuals with severe needle phobia, as this is an injection-based treatment.

What Technique Do I Use?

Segmental Neural Therapy

The technique I use in these cases is Segmental Neural Therapy.

It consists of applying microinjections to the skin segment innervated by the nerve affected during the inflammatory process of herpes zoster. In other words, the treatment works directly on the area where the nervous system remains sensitized.

This segmental approach allows precise intervention at the source of persistent neuropathic pain.

How Many Sessions Are Needed?

On average, 3 sessions are usually sufficient, performed every 7 to 15 days.

However, the number of sessions may vary depending on:

  • The severity of the pain
  • The duration of postherpetic neuralgia
  • The individual patient’s response

Each case is evaluated individually.

What Results Have I Observed?

In my experience, I have observed excellent outcomes, with substantial improvement in patients’ quality of life.

In many cases, improvement begins after the first session, with progressive pain reduction and restoration of restful sleep.

The goal is not only to reduce pain, but to help patients return to sleeping well, working, and carrying out daily activities with greater comfort and peace of mind.
