Tips from dermatologist Laura Habib on how to prevent cold sores

Have you ever had cold sores or labial herpes?
These annoying eruptions are caused by the herpes simplex virus. This virus is characterized by its ability to remain dormant in our body for years after the first infection, traveling stealthily between our skin and nerves. At any moment, cold sores or labial herpes can be triggered by stress (caused by physical, emotional, or surgical events, etc.), leading to tiny blisters that cluster together and form scabs. These can be extremely painful and cause a burning sensation.
During outbreaks, in addition to antiviral treatment (oral), it is crucial to know what to do to prevent future episodes.
How to prevent cold sores or labial herpes?
Avoid foods rich in arginine, a protein that strengthens the external structure of the virus. These foods include:

- Chocolate
- Popcorn
- Nuts
- Peanuts
- Asparagus
- Strawberries
- Pineapple
- Beer
- Raisins
- Cow's milk
- Sports supplements (e.g., whey protein)
Increase your intake of:

- Red meats
- White meats
- Eggs
- Legumes
These foods are rich in lysine, a protein that competes with arginine and may inhibit the virus, helping to prevent outbreaks and reduce their severity.
To strengthen the immune system and prevent outbreaks (prophylaxis), L-Lysine supplements and antioxidant immunomodulators are also used. Consult your dermatologist to get the right prescription tailored to your case, including dosage and treatment duration.
Always inform your doctor about your history of cold sores or labial herpes during medical consultations.
The virus may reactivate after procedures such as dermabrasion, chemical peels, injectables, lasers, and other skin treatments.
Take care of your skin and keep it beautiful!
