About Dr. Luis Escaf Jaraba
I am Dr. Luis Escaf Jaraba, an ophthalmologist in Barranquilla, Colombia, with more than 40 years of medical experience as a surgeon, researcher, educator, and innovation leader in the field of ophthalmology in Colombia and Latin America.
I graduated as a medical doctor from the University of Antioquia (Medellín) and completed my specialization in Ophthalmology at the University of Rosario (Bogotá), with clinical training at the Central Military Hospital. I am a pioneer in cataract surgery with multifocal intraocular lenses and a national reference in refractive surgery, cornea, and anterior segment.
I am the founder and director of VIU International Ophthalmology Clinic, a leading institution in specialized eye care and academic training, where I oversee residency and fellowship programs. I have served as President of the Colombian Society of Ophthalmology, founder of the Colombian Association of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ASOCCYR), and I have been recognized as a Senior Researcher by Colciencias.
In 2018, I received the Simón Bolívar Award as Entrepreneur of the Year for my innovative vision and contribution to the advancement of ophthalmic medicine in the region. I am also the inventor of next-generation surgical instruments, including the world’s first ultrasonic scalpel for cataract surgery (Ultrashoper).
As a national and international speaker, I have participated in numerous medical congresses worldwide, sharing my experience and establishing myself as a key opinion leader in ophthalmology.
I provide specialized care in anterior segment, cornea, and refractive surgery; cataract surgery with premium intraocular lenses; LASIK and PRK refractive procedures for the correction of myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism; keratoconus treatment using intracorneal rings and corneal cross-linking; as well as penetrating and lamellar corneal transplants.
I deliver high-precision diagnosis and comprehensive management of anterior segment eye diseases, including cataracts (senile, traumatic, and congenital), keratoconus and other corneal ectasias, corneal dystrophies and degenerations, refractive errors such as presbyopia, myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism, as well as inflammatory conditions like anterior uveitis.
