The dentist is the professional in charge of oral health, covering the care of the mouth, teeth, gums, periodontium and temporomandibular joint. This specialist is dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases and disorders related to the oral cavity, including dental caries, gum disease, malocclusion and other dental and periodontal problems. In addition, the dentist performs procedures such as dental cleanings, fillings, tooth extractions, endodontics, and places dental prostheses to restore oral function and aesthetics. It is important to visit the dentist regularly for dental checkups and professional cleanings, as well as to treat any dental problems that may arise, ensuring good oral health and a healthy smile throughout life.

What does a dentist treat?
A dentist is a healthcare professional responsible for preventing, diagnosing, and treating conditions related to the teeth, gums, and oral cavity. The most common problems dentists treat include cavities, gum disease (gingivitis and periodontitis), dental infections, tooth loss, bite problems, and cosmetic issues related to the smile. Dentists in Barranquilla also perform procedures such as dental cleanings, teeth whitening, restorations, dental prosthetics, and smile design treatments.
What are the dental specialties in Barranquilla?
In Barranquilla, you can find general dentists as well as specialists in different areas of dentistry. Some of the most common specialties include:
 - Orthodontics: teeth alignment with braces or clear aligners.
 - Implant dentistry: dental implants.
 - Periodontics: gum treatment.
 - Endodontics: root canal treatment.
 - Pediatric dentistry: dental care for children.
 - Oral rehabilitation: dentures and restorative treatments.
 - Oral and maxillofacial surgery: wisdom tooth extraction and oral surgery.
 - Cosmetic dentistry: smile design, veneers, and teeth whitening.
These specialties allow dentists to provide more specific and personalized treatments based on each patient’s needs.
When should I visit a dentist?
It is recommended to visit a dentist at least once a year for a routine checkup and professional cleaning to help prevent oral diseases. However, you should also seek care if you experience symptoms such as tooth pain, sensitivity, bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, broken teeth, or loose teeth.
If you are undergoing orthodontic treatment, it is very important not to miss your monthly appointments with your dentist or orthodontist. These visits are necessary to adjust braces or aligners so that your treatment progresses correctly and on schedule.
How much does a dental consultation cost in Barranquilla?
In Barranquilla, a dental consultation usually costs between $80,000 and $150,000 Colombian pesos, depending on the specialist, clinic, and type of evaluation. In many cases, the consultation fee is deducted from the total treatment cost if the patient decides to proceed. Some specialists also offer free consultations, especially in areas such as orthodontics, dental implants, or smile design.
Where are the best dentists located in Barranquilla?

It is also common to find dental services in shopping centers and medical complexes such as Mall Plaza, Portal del Prado, Torre Médica del Mar, Portoazul, and Centro Médico Continental, where different healthcare specialists are located in one place, making access easier.

Is dental care covered by EPS? What is included and what is not?
In Colombia, many basic dental treatments are covered by the public health system through EPS. Basic coverage usually includes initial evaluations, dental cleanings (prophylaxis), simple tooth extractions, cavity treatments, and some emergency procedures.
However, not all treatments are fully covered. More specialized or cosmetic procedures such as orthodontics (braces), smile design, veneers, dental implants, teeth whitening, and advanced restorations are generally not included in the basic plan and must be paid for privately by the patient.
