About Luis Carlos Escaf Sales
I am Dr. Luis Carlos Escaf Sales, an ophthalmologist in Barranquilla, Colombia, specialized in cataract surgery, anterior segment, and medical and surgical retina, with strong academic training and a comprehensive approach to eye disease diagnosis and treatment.
I graduated as a medical doctor from Pontificia Universidad Javeriana and completed my ophthalmology residency at the Fundación Oftalmológica de Santander (FOSCAL). I later pursued subspecialty training in the anterior segment at the Clínica Oftalmológica del Caribe (COFCA) and in medical and surgical retina at St. Michael’s Hospital, University of Toronto (Canada), where I was honored to be a COLFUTURO scholarship fellow.
I currently serve as Scientific and Research Director of the Clínica Oftalmológica del Caribe and am the founder of the Colombian Institute for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (CIRVO), leading clinical studies focused on developing new therapies to improve visual health. My professional approach combines surgical excellence with cutting-edge research, optimizing clinical protocols that positively impact the lives of thousands of patients.
I have also worked as a research assistant at the Blavatnik Institute of Biomedical Informatics, Harvard Medical School, and served as Colombia’s young representative to ARVO (Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology), one of the world’s most important scientific organizations in visual research.
I am known for leadership, strategic thinking, and a strong commitment to training new medical professionals, positioning myself as a reference in ophthalmology in Latin America and actively collaborating with international institutions to expand the frontiers of vision science.
