School Failure

What is school failure?

School failure refers to academic performance that is significantly below what would be expected for a student's age and educational level and may lead to repeated grades, failed subjects or difficulty meeting school expectations. It can be related to learning difficulties, attention problems, emotional or family issues, behavior or educational factors.

When should I seek help for poor school performance?

Professional evaluation is recommended when a child or teenager has a persistent decline in grades, difficulty learning, concentration problems, lack of motivation, school refusal, anxiety, sadness or behavior changes. Identifying the underlying factors can help guide appropriate support.

What specialists evaluate and treat school failure?

Assessment may involve child psychologists, educational psychologists and neuropsychologists who evaluate learning, attention, memory, emotions and cognitive functions. Pediatricians, child and adolescent psychiatrists, pediatric neurologists, speech-language therapists and occupational therapists may also be involved when specific difficulties are present. Treatment may include psychotherapy, educational intervention, learning support and treatment of associated conditions.
