Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

What is Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)?

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that can affect attention, impulse control and activity levels. It can occur in children, adolescents and adults and may involve difficulty concentrating, frequent forgetfulness, disorganization, restlessness or impulsivity that interferes with daily life.

When should I seek an evaluation for possible ADHD?

Professional evaluation is recommended when inattention, hyperactivity or impulsivity are persistent and affect school or work performance, relationships, organization or daily activities. In children, signs may also include academic difficulties, trouble following instructions or behavioral problems.

What specialists diagnose and treat ADHD?

Assessment may involve clinical psychologists, neuropsychologists, child and adolescent psychiatrists, adult psychiatrists, pediatricians and other professionals depending on age and individual needs. Psychologists and neuropsychologists can assess attention, executive functions and behavior and provide psychotherapy or behavioral interventions. Psychiatrists can provide medical evaluation and consider medication when clinically appropriate. Pediatricians may participate in initial assessment and follow-up for children.
