Tubal Recanalization

What is tubal recanalization?

Tubal recanalization or tubal ligation reversal is a procedure that involves recanalizing or reconnecting the uterine tubes in women who underwent surgical sterilization by tubal ligation technique or "POMEROY" and currently wish to conceive a new pregnancy.

How is tubal recanalization performed?

In the tubal recanalization procedure, the cut and clogged segments of the fallopian tubes reconnect with the remaining portions of these. With Dr. Pineda's technique, the placement of a catheter through the uterine cavity guided by a hysteroscope chamber is added to help identify the areas to be reconnected. This procedure allows the ovules to be captured again by the tubes and the sperm can rise through the uterus cavity and reach the ovum at the level of the fallopian tubes.

Tubal recanalization is not suitable for all people. The fertility specialist should evaluate before the procedure the factors that determine the chances of pregnancy once the tubes are permeable and can ensure the success of the surgery, the main ones are:

  1. The woman must be under 38 years of age.
  2. What was the technique used for tubal ligation
  3. Discard other causes that prevent fertility.

What to expect from tubal recanalization surgery?

The purpose of this surgical procedure is; return the possibility of being mothers again and having a NATURAL pregnancy to all those women who were sterilized by surgery.

How to prepare for tubal recanalization?

Before performing tubal recanalization surgery, a consultation with the fertility specialist should be performed. In order to assess whether the procedure is indicated based on the results of pregnancy after the tubes are permeable again. In addition, the details of the procedure and the success rate will be explained.

What is the success rate?

Success rates after a tubal ligation reversal can vary greatly, depending on certain factors such as maternal age and the presence of other factors that cause infertility such as partner semen. However, if the patient before surgery was evaluated and indicated adequately, the chances of having a natural pregnancy after recanalization are very high, especially women aged 38 years or less, being around 70% of success.

How long is the pregnancy expected to occur?

You must wait up to one year after surgery for pregnancy to occur naturally.

Risks of tubal recanalization surgery?

The fallopian tube recanalization process is an outpatient process, with risks like any other minor surgical procedure for the patient, but which has a fairly rapid recovery.

How many women do tubal recanalization surgery?

It is estimated that about 7% of women who underwent surgical sterilization with pomeroy wish for multiple reasons to reverse this surgery and seek a new pregnancy.
