Diseases of the liver by Dr. Oscar Páez, gastroenterologist from Barranquilla
Liver diseases
Liver damage can be caused by viruses, medications, alcohol, or can result from an autoimmune response. Symptoms of liver disease include jaundice (yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes), abnormal swelling in the arms and legs, weakness, fatigue/tiredness, pain in the upper right part of the abdomen, light-colored stools, urine dark in color and itchy.
The most common causes of liver disease in addition to autoimmune are excess alcohol, viral hepatitis A, B and C, fatty liver disease (NASH), alcoholic hepatitis, cirrhosis or chronic liver disease.
Liver diseases are very serious health conditions that usually affect the liver's ability to function normally. If you have any of the symptoms mentioned, see a gastroenterologist.
